As suggested previously, what if the character I create has some kind of gender identity disorder? I've been roleplaying for years upon years, and while I've never made such a character, I'm reasonably sure I could play one like this.

Well, a lot of games have a "Makeover Mage" if you will.

I wouldn't see the harm in it. And when it comes to people looking like you for "Scamming", to whomever made this statement, I usually look at the person's name.... not his clothing and hair under his armor, helmet or mask. Don't know about you on that one.

Sex changes? Well, I wouldn't mind changing my Elementalist to a male, being all my other characters are male, and it was made by my idiot friend, and I took her too far that I didn't want to delete her. But I don't see much point in the long run.

But really, I don't see what the harm would be. I know I'd like my tank to be a tad taller, and maybe change his hair... the others I'm pretty satisfied with, but I'd support the idea if this is still on the discussion floor down at NCsoft.

I'd support changing hairstyles, makeup, and clothing - but no more.

Want more, make a different character.

I'd also like, in GW2 at least, during character creation ONLY, some ability to custom morph my facial features and body proportions like I can in City of Heroes.

Actually, it is quite possible for player appearances to change in plain old table top RPG games, though granted it is usually in the form of some accident that causes deformation in one way or another..... and rarely gender though that does happen. Traditional table top rpgs did NOT prevent one from wanting to change their hairstyle/color (though granted it was up to the dungeon(game) master, and pretty much didn't have any affect on the game unless (s)he wanted it to), and it WAS possible for changes in the face, maybe scars from accidents or what not. The fun in the table top rpgs back then was that ANYTHING you wanted to do you COULD do... subject to things that was reasonable in the setting of course, and whether your game master wanted to allow it or not. I remember playing a thief back in the day that lost all his hair due to an accident, and got stuck with a cursed ring that swapped genders..... (which was actually an official item listed in one of the books...)

Traditional table-top RPGs also had a story behind every major physical change - here, the only reasons offered are "I should've started with the other gender first," "I don't want to waste the time I've already put in," etc. There are no RP reasons being offered beside out-of-character convenience.

Character appearance changes?

Magic 8-Ball says, "Ask again later."

About changing gender,

"Yeah, right."

Before you oppose this feature being implemented because of roleplay reasons, etc, think about it carefully, maybe figure out what option means.

Bottom line, if you don't want to change your character's or characters' appearance, why should you stop others who want to?

I think you should be able to get a sex change for your character,

However, each time you do this you should be a little bit more ugly looking (like the suggestion for female body with male head) so that after switching back and forth a couple of times between male and female you are officially an abdomination of nature.

I'm thinking Micheal Jackson...

Re: The Gender Bender thing

Even though these are only "options", Anet may not care to implement something that will make some people feel insecure or "icky". I couldn't give a rat's @ss if someone just rerolled their avatar's gender (only pixels to me), but not everyone can just brush it off like that and it really bothers them (why? beats me).

But ultimately I think they won't add any of these customization options anyway because priority goes to GW2. Simple as that.

In Everquest 2 we got the option to change our characters appearance a few times as a special occasion.
I changed my troll to dark red instead of light red. And my friend gave her toon a smirk.
Nobody noticed our outrageous changes.

Sex change: For 100k, you will be able to change your gender. The success rate is 25 + 5 x Lucky Rank %. Failure may cause your male wammo having boobs, female ele doing male emo dancing etc etc. You can only use this function once.

You got a "Hero" that helped generations of people.
Why would you like to completely change the look of that "Hero", even the sex?
Wouldn't that mean, that it isn't the "Hero" anymore?

I'm not against that people can change it, I just don't see how it fits into GW.
I got an other idea though.
How about a sub character system?
Which means, Anet implements an hidden character slot for each character.
When you have beaten the game, there is a special quest, which isn't easy.
When you have completed that quest, you get a character screen pop-up like the character creation screen, where you can create a new character, but only the look and name.
The 1st and 2nd classes, skills will be the same as for the character that completed the quest. And level 20 of course.
Armor will be max standard choices from some npc added, and titles will not follow. Since titles belong to the "Hero" not this new character.
But all areas and outposts will be open the same way as for it's "Hero".
And those 100k you can then use for getting a new and shiny armor for it instead.
Every thing that new character does concerning titles, will go to the original "Hero" character.
You can only do this one time for each character. But still, it gives you an additional option.

The question is not when, the question is if. I haven't seen any indications of ArenaNet that they plan to add these options to the game. For me limited changes including a name change would be a nice option to have. Paid for in-game gold and with a x times per certain time limit to avoid too many changes.

From the role-playing perspective - isn't the current system for change a little disturbing? Take character to merchant - remove all items/clothes, sell, put cash in Xunlai, then kill character and replace.

It must really freak some of you out, seeing a naked guy standing at the merchant and knowing you'll likely never see him again... Have any of you ever called Anet to report a robbery/murder in process?

FWIW - I don't think there should be a role-playing explanation. The process to change a character should be handled at the character selection screen and not involve the use of any silly "magic" NPC's. Just give us a re-edit button and naysayers bugger off! You're not playing *my* game.

Shocking news, not everyone is RPing in this game. Why do people care about other people characters? You wont even know if that person in your PuG just change appearance or not (Hell I only H/H these days, no one would know that I just change my character appearance).

the latest merchants refuse to talk to you despite having saved the world 3 times. they don't give a hoot abt lore and role-play, why should we?!

on a more serious note, i think Hyper.nl is right. no matter how much we think how easy it is to implement, it is ultimately up to anet, and nobody has given any indication that this is going to happen. the initial suggestion was for hair and you can see where that went... gender, face and height... i just can't see it happening despite the appeal it may have for some people.
